Default SNG Starting Hand Question

Ace-Jack suited UTG, level 1 of a SNG... no reads.

What is your play?

How about with a pair of 5's?

Does the blind structure (turbo / non) or buy-in level influence this??

Cheers, Mark

Turbo and the buy in changes this a lot. In a low buy in you will certainly get called at the very minimum, potentially reraised by a lot of hands that you could beat or even can not beat.
Higher buyins you will only get action from players that have you beat.

The buy in and skill level does lay a huge factor in these decisions.

This early with these hands UTG I tend to limp and see what kind of action develops.

AJ fold , even in the button with no one in the pot
55 limp and call no more than a 3 bet raise in any position , fold to a non 5 flop , even a 234 flop.

Im a such a nit !!!

Well, I actually fold both! (a 'super-nit!').

Would play the 5's in an MTT and also the AJ if deepstacked in an MTT or in a cash-game.

Cheers, Mark

With AJs UTG, I would limp and see what comes, as I would with 55. I will call a 3 bet raise with either, but no more than that in the hopes that I will hit on the flop. You're looking at the early stages of the SnG when the CSI's are much bigger...at the lower levels I play at, you are less likely to be raised big in the early levels, unless there is a premium hand at the table. I don't fear a raise following my limp early in a SnG as much as I do later on when the blinds move up and antes kick in. If I don't hit the flop, I'm done.

I see your point, Mr. TynKyn...I'd have no information on anyone yet; playing AJ would leave me with top pair and a mid-level kicker.

This is what I like about this forum...makes novices like me think before I act....probably would have to let it go, huh? I retract my play of AJ UTG...lol

The referrence to the falling on a sword is taken from Japanese culture in the day of the Samuri...If you dishonored yourself in some way, it was expected that the Samuri warrior would commit Hari-Kari...(suicide). If this happened to a Samuri, he would pick his best sword with which he would use to kill himself, often he would use the same sword he would slay his enemies with. Therefore, he would choose his sword wisely, lest it be the one he would have to use on himself.

By reading the responses I'm thinking I should be folding with both.

For me, I'm not good at answering hypotheticals because I would need to be in the situation and have a feel for the table.

My default plays would be to fold the AJ and limp the 55.

I might also occassionally limp, fold or raise with both just to mix things up a little. Should I get re-raised I'd probably call a reasonable re-raise with the 55 and instant fold the AJ about 150% of the time.

I would fold the AJ and i would limp in with the 5's see a cheep flop that could turn into a monster if you hit the right flop .
