Re: High Roller: The Stu Ungar Story
Stuey used to walk right by me and nod his head, I wasn't good enough for him to actually speak to me, but he would acknowledge my existance my smiling. Then a few months before he died he came up to me and put his arm around me at the 4 Queens main event. I said, "Stuey. don't try to bite me because it ain't happening. He laughed, and said, "you always were pretty sharp. If I am this easy to read, I guess I don't play as good as I think I do!" and he walked away laughing.
Stuey was a great player, his drug habit just took him down. I have played at his tournament table maybe a half of dozen times and he was the dominant force every time! Between the time he won the WSOP and his death, I think he was arrested something like 6 times, trying to buy crack downtown on 6th street. If you understood him for what he was, he really was a good guy. I have heard many stories where he had put some broke poker player in action, when he didn't have much money in his pocket!
One female dealer that I was friends with, dealt to him in a high stakes ring game at the WSOP; he gut rivered and lost a huge pot and went crazy on her, she said, "Stuey, tell me how you really feel honey, don't be shy!" Her comment actually cracked him up and he threw her a green chip and called her a cunt!
Stuey had a world class game and could have handeled today's stars as easy as he did the stars from yesterday, he always read his opponents perfectly. |
