Default Backgammon (not spam)

I know this is a poker forum but I also know that (at least in the past) many people who play poker play backgammon. I for one LOVE backgammon. I have played for some money in the past but nothing serious and I must admit I have not studied a ton of strategy on the game but would love to learn some of the tricks! So does anyone else here play backgammon? Anyone have any tips? It is a great game. Simple (at first) and fun to play.

So who here has backgammon advice?

There is supposedly a big crossover of player bases between backgammon players and poker players.

I know a couple guys that are world class backgammon players that are also pretty solid poker players. Gus Hansen is supposed to be a very good backgammon player, but I have no way to verify that other than what people say.

Unfortunately, I know absolutely nothing about the game of backgammon, so I won't be much help with strategy. I was somewhat surprised to learn how much of a skill game backgammon is.

Yeah there is a ton of strategy ni backgammon. The only problem I have is that each time I have picked up a backgammon book to get an idea of the strategy it just looks like a bunch of memorizing first rolls and math and looks very intimidating. I think that if I can get some money on Carbo Poker and start playing more backgammon I may buy a book as it simply seems like too much information if you are not playing regularly.

I think that the co-author of Harrington on Hold Em (Dan Robertie I think?) wrote a backgammon book. Considering HOH is the king of tourney poker books, maybe that one is good.

Yeah I knew about Robertie. Once I get some money on Carbo Poker I will go book shopping. Right now I am in no rush though. Very busy between work, school, baby, poker, and now GTA IV

I bought the Playstation and Playstation 2 (both used) for the sole purpose of playing the GTA games. Don't think I'll be coughing up the money for the latest GTA machine, too expensive!

Yeah I am playing it on the xbox 360 elite. It is hard to not play Call of Duty 4 on XBOX Live while I play this one...

If you look at the latest backgammon world rankings of players.

2 Big name poker players are still ranked in the top 25 players in the world. Paul "X-22" "Quack, Quack" Magriel is considered to be one of the top 5 players in the world and has written several books.

Gus Hanson is still ranked even though he has not played nearly as often as he use to and is still in the top 20.

I've played poker with Paul several times, he is a bit strange to say the least but is highly intelligent and like kickboy said is supposed to be a world class backgammon player.

I know he gets paid pretty well to give backgammon lessons.

My Understanding is that Paul has taught many of the best backgammon players in the world. But my understanding is that he now teaches poker. He has many top hold'em players taking lesson from him in fact many are in the shark club. At one time reports are he had 3 top sharks in the shark club at the same time. I believe he probably is one of the best teachers of the game. With a huge IQ how can he not be one of the best teachers in anything he puts his mind too.
