Pot-Limit Omaha Poker - Jeff Hwang (Review)
Pot-Limit Omaha Poker by Jeff Hwang Rarely does a book come along that has such an influence on my game that I feel I have improved by leaps and bounds immediately after reading it, this is one of those books. I put this book up there with the Harrington On Hold Em series as far as it’s relevance, readability, and overall good advice and teaching given in this book. For the Omaha player, this book is a must read, for the Hold em player branching into Omaha, this is a must read, for pretty much anyone who plays Omaha in any form, this book is a must read. The book is well written, easy to understand, and provides a very good winning strategy that is easy to understand. Jeff Hwang does an excellent job of illustrating his “big play” strategy for Omaha. This book made me a much better PLO player overnight. For as well as this book is written the title is definitely a little mis-leading. The title is “Pot-Limit Omaha Poker” when in fact nearly the whole second half of the book is dedicated to structured Omaha Hi/Lo and is rounded out with a rare Pot-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo section. This is in no way a bad thing as his Omaha Hi/Lo advice is spot on and his Pot-Limit Hi/Lo section is very well written and not to mention, a rare and good find. The Pot-Limit Omaha section is one of the best pieces of poker literature I have ever come across. I should also mention that I felt a big improvement in my big stack Hold em game as a result of reading Jeff’s book as he discusses how much stack size effects how you play hands and this really helped my game in other forms of big bet poker as a whole. It may be titled as an Omaha book, but any big bet poker player will gain from his advice. Hwang structured this book similar to another title that is well known as one of the best works in poker literature, Harrington on Hold em, which worked well. The book covers key concepts of a particular game, and is followed with a series of quizzes and sample hands in which you make decisions which are scored. The format really makes this book one you can learn from. I can really say my only complaint with this book is that I wish it was longer! In closing, Jeff Hwang did an excellent job with this book. To tell you the truth, as far as relevance, readability, and just plain ability to improve ones game, I put this book right at the top as one of the best poker books I have ever read. I wish there was a little bit more in the area of PLO but what was included was incredibly spot on and every sentence seemed to have some great advice. This book will improve your game. This book bleeds good advice. The next book you buy should be Pot Limit Omaha Poker by Jeff Hwang. . This is definitely not a book you want to pass up! |
