New Post Caro's Book of Tells by Mike Caro

Internationally known as the Mad Genius of Poker (now there is a label!) Mike wrote the first edition of this book back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth but has really updated and made this more contemporary. In fact, you should have two of these books in your library, one from the 1960's and the updated version.

This is all about physical "tells" or mannerisms of live players. He did a lot of pretty insane statistical work to back up the numbers here, and is a close friend of Doyle Brunson et al.

I think you need to read this book AND have it in you library, ... in that order. That said, "tells" are not critical for the amateur and improving player IMHO. The number of pots I have taken by acting strong with a strong hand when I understood that my opponent worshiped at the shrine of tells is pretty numerous but the main result of this excellent book is that it cultivates habits of being observant.

The photos are mesmerising and make you think.

I appreciated Caro's book more when I read other books on tells, which are clinical and stilted to read, whereas this book talks to you. Yes, the book has a patronizing streak a mile wide, but Mike is education us poor lost children, blind to "real poker" and is a missionary with an idea to sell. Great book that you can dip into over and over, and certainly is usually the last-minute book players pop into their luggage prior to leaving for the WSOP every year ... just in case.

I like this book. I read most of it on my flight back to Denver from the WSOP. I have thumbed through it a few times. Oddly enough non-poker players find the book interesting. Just the idea of a poker book that is all about the way people act during a card game seems to grab peoples attention.
