Default WSOP Qualifiers: Poker Stars Step Tournaments?

Does anyone have any advice on making it through these steps?

So far I put together a plan to get 10 step 2 tickets and then try to move up ranks through that.

I will also admit I am playnig tite for 1st 2 blind levels and super aggressive late (due to whole table playing super tite)

Does anyone have any further advice on these steps for qualifying or things they have noticed working for them?

I think the steps are a great way to try and win a seat into major poker events or bigger buy in tournaments.

To be honest I haven't played to many of the step events, so I don't have any real specific advice to give.

It sounds like you are on the right track with playing tight early, and when people start to get passive in the later rounds out of fear, taking advantage of that passiveness.

I'll see if I can't our sit n go tournament and mult-table expert (SNGPlanetMark)to give you some tips for the steps tournaments.

Hey Kickboy,

Sounds like a good plan to stay tight early - my personal experience of the WSOP and EPT steps is that the lower levels are attracting a lot of recreational 'any 2-suited' types which leads to its own strategy adjustments...

Understanding equity models (ICM) and how to adjust to the Steps payout structures should give you a significant edge in these games.... for the first few levels you need to assume opponent calling ranges are super-wide compared to the equivalent SNGs, at the higher levels expect your opponents to understand ICM well and be actively using this.

Did a series of articles on the Party Steps, based on both the equity models and adjusting to 'extra bad' opponents... the numbers are slightly different but the principles the same: for the WSOP steps you need to start at 'part-2'

GL at those tables, Mark

Great tips Mark!

I haven't played any of the step events, but I may give it a go after checking out Mark's articles.

I agree playing tight early on is the way to go although you may find spots where you can play agressive against certain players.

As you move up steps make sure you pick your games carefully.

I had a nice little run in the PCA steps and found Steps 4 and 5 by far the easiest stages I played, and even Step 6 wasn't that bad, it just wasn't my game but I took a nice cash prize. As I moved up the steps I started observing which SNG players were playing regulary in the high stakes games, and roughly what times they were playing. I used Sharkscope to scout the unknowns.

After a few days I finally found a game that was nearly full with losing and lower stakes players, with only one or maybe 2 strong players in and I joined.

IMO Game selection, more than my skill or luck in the game, helped me move up.

That makes a lot of sense. Why play against the toughest players if you can scout for possibly weaker players.
