Default Poker face - impossible for some?

So I was just at work the other day and one of my colleagues said, "I would never be able to play poker. I can't get a poker face. My feelings are always so obvious."

Have you come across people who were either really bad bluffers or those who didn't even try because they knew they couldn't?

The term "poker face" is so vauge. A better way to put it would be "I have too many tells." Also as a new player it isn't tells he need to be worried about. Honestly the scariest part about a new player is that I can look at them and tell that they think they are weak but in reality they have no idea if they are weak or strong so tells are useless on new players.

To put it simply, nobody is going to be able to tell what your buddy is going to do if he doesn't even know what he is going to do. Tell him to try the game, you will never learn to play or bluff for that matter if you don't try. We all started somewhere and we all lost and will continue to have more losing sessions, some of us just have less losing sessions than others

Hey, that's great advice. I'll be sure to tell my friend that. You're right. I mean, chances are, we won't have a clue what he's going to do if he himself doesn't either.

I agree with that advice above. I do have a friend that where's his emotions on his face. You can usually tell what is up just by looking at him. I have tried to get him to wear sunglasses while playing because that is where you can tell he is up to something.

There will always be some that don't have a good poker face or can't hide their tells. Not everyone can play hockey either, or play an instrument.

You bring up an interesting point about a poker face. Some people are easier to read than others. I like what "PoWdA" said about new players not knowing what they have, so it's pretty tough to read them, funny, but true.

Some people naturally have a good "Poker Face" others have to work on it. I definitely believe that developing a poker face is a skill that can be learned.

One of the key's to having a good poker face is to be consistent in your actions. If you normally talk a lot or are smily and bubbly, do the same thing whether your weak or strong, betting the nuts or bluffing.

Poker Tells is a related but somewhat different topic. I'm going to start a new thread about Poker Tells.

So, what do you all think of sunglasses in the live poker realm? Do they really hide a person's emotions? Good or not good (should they be allowed in tournament play)?
I don't have a problem with them and would probably use them myself if the stakes were big enough.

well for me it doesn't affect much.. but i prefer players take it off as we can see their face :D but wearing a sunglasses at night playing poker? lol, just be careful as sometime you might not see those cards clear (especially spades and clubs)

Personally, I don't wear sunglasses, but I know people who do. I'm not really sure how much of a difference it makes to be honest. If you are a good player, I think you can learn to have a poker face that doesn't give away much.

Most Pro's don't wear sunglasses, although there are exceptions like Hellmuth who comes to mind.

I think the value of wearing sunglasses is less than the value of possibly making a mistake by misreading the board from wearing sunglasses. . I've seen quite a few players with sunglasses misread the board, and have to take their glasses off.
