Default Free Poker Tips

One of our members posted a question about requesting any great tips for new poker players. The thread got a little buried and disorganized so I figured I would take the best free poker tips from that article and start a new thread ranking the tips in the order of importance. If anyone disagrees on the order or has more poker tips to add to the list please post away.

Free Poker Tips:

1. Game Selection - Choosing the right game is the single most important factor in determining if you are going to win or not. You might be the 6th best player in the world, but if you’re playing with the top 5 I don't like your chances.
• If you are a tight player you probably want to play with loose and passive players, they are easier to read and will fold hands, call with weak hands and only bet when they have a strong hand and will normally pay you off when you have a big hand.

• If you have a loose and aggressive style the most profitable poker games for you to play in are probably with weak-tight players. Your aggression and fearlessness will force them to fold all but their premium hands.
Tip suggested by: PoWda, GoodKarmaKid,SNGPlanet Mark, PocketRockets,
2. Play Fewer Hands - Tighten up you starting hands selection. Play premium hands, you are more likely to finish with the best hand if you start with the best hand. Be Patient, wait for the good hands, sometimes it seems like they never come, but they will
Tip suggested by: PoWda, GoodKarmaKid, sol22, Jetzm, PocketRockets
3. Bankroll Management – Being properly funded for the limits you are playing. You should have approximately 300 Big Bets for the limit you are playing. Another good rule of thumb is to never lose more than 30 big bets in any one session. Also, Good Betting & bet sizing strategy is very important.
Tip suggested by: SNGPlanet Mark
4. Don’t be a Calling Station – It’s much better to be the bettor as opposed to a caller. By being the bettor or the aggressor you are giving yourself one additional way to win the pot because your opponent may fold. Aggression = $$$
Tip suggested by: Jetzm, SNGPlanet Mark
5. Avoid Tilt - Don’t let Bad Beats affect you. There is no profit in getting mad. All you can do as a poker player is put money in the pot with the best hand. If someone catches a miracle to beat you, just get over it and play the next hand. Bad beats seem to happen more frequently on the internet but this is mostly a function of playing 2-3 times as many hands in the same period of time.
Tip suggested by: Foolz, PoWda

6. Playing Position Effectively - Detailed explanation coming soon.
Tip suggested by: PocketRockets,

7. Understand the difference in Strategy between Cash Games & Tournaments -
Tip suggestedby: ertrauma

8. Study Poker Books & Poker Videos -
Tip suggested by: fourKingShit
Do you have any other poker tips to add to the list???

Good tips!

Game selection is one of the things I look at more closely now than when I first started playing.

Playing fewer hands is especially important. Playing the premium hands does up your odds. If you're in position you can also have a crack at some good medium hands.

Here's one for ya:
If you think your beat, you probably are!
Don't be afraid to lay a hand down. Trust your gut instincts. The more hands you play, the sharper those instincts become.

A couple more for those who like the tournaments:
Preservation of chips is more important than winning a single pot.

If you push all in, try to be the one who pushes first. This gives you 2 ways to win the hand: 1)He may fold to your all in bet or 2) you can win at the showdown.

I agree, why play against someone who... ya you might win but your gonna at best break even over 50 games, why not search out those tables that have players that u can milk all night, i know for myself sometimes i find myself being stubborn and wanting to put more money into a table because i feel i'm the better player and the person just got lucky, but why bother, if it wasn't a bad beat and you just got out played move on to the next table. Look for those sitting ducks that are just waiting to throw their money at you, and your BR will grow rapidly
