| My #1 tip is to pick the right game. Obviously Hold em is the most popular so you want to start there but if you have access to other games regularly then often times these other games will be far more profitable if you learn to play them right. As far as a general tip. Play fewer hands. |

| What are your general "rules of thumb" when looking for a good "soft" game?

| If I was learning to play the game of holdem, first I would play real cheap buyin tournaments or play the 2 to 5 cent limit holdem cash games and sit n gos is a real good way of getting final table expierence. Do it as cheap as possible to gain that all important expierence. |

![]() | What are your general "rules of thumb" when looking for a good "soft" game? Hmmm, different answers for different games / styles / individuals... my favourite type of game has players who are both loose and passive, they are the easiest to read (will fold bad hands, call with weak hands and only ever bet when strong) and the most likely to pay you off when you hit a monster. For those players with a loose / aggressive style the most profitable games are probably those with weak-tight players. tips on playing poker very well? Sure, bankroll management, site / table selection and (most importantly) good betting + bet sizing strategy (habitual 'callers' are not long term winners in poker... aggression = $$$). Cheers, Mark |

| If you don't know much about the game maybe practice on the play money tables and in freerolls until you get a better feel for the game. I agree with sol22 that patience is required. Playing good hands is important when you are just starting out, but as you get better you'll be able to get creative with less than ideal hands. |

| Definitely play fewer hands. I think that's a big problem with beginning players. I've also seen a lot of new players who are afraid that they're always being bluffed off of a hand. They don't want to look foolish, so they'll call things all the way down with nothing, just so they don't have to fold. Incidentally, that tends to make you look foolish. I think one of the best things I was told when I first started playing was that I need to remember that I'm not the hero. This isn't a movie and I can't just expect to draw the miracle card in the very end and win a bajillion dollars. It doesn't work like that. |
