For some reason there seem to be a higher than normal proportion of all caps chat box action while playing online today... got me wondering.

Is this just an age thing? that a for a new generation it is 'normal' to have all caps.

Is it done deliberately to irritate? which would be fine by me, its all fair game.

Some lower IQ person who does not know any better?

Or is it something else that I am missing completely?

The online lingo for people using all caps is "SHOUTING", typically people do it for emphasis out of ignorance. They think people are more likely to read what they are saying when in reality they will more likely ignore it.

It's widely considered to be rude behaviour on the internet to type in ALL CAPS.

It drives me so crazy that I have a featured enabled on this board that prevents most SHOUTING.

There is a specific kind of player that uses all caps when typing: The professor type . You know, the guy that just can't help but tell you that you were "drawing slim to none ... and Slim is out of town." These non-objective players 'shout' by putting everything in capitals ... which is annoying.

I have a policy playing online that anyone that is even marginally annoying, I mute their chat ... it solves a lot of problems, eliminates the distraction, but I do put in their notes "professor type" because these kind of players play a subset of hands that are very predictable, and in Pot Limit Omaha, are a literal river of money when your odd hand hits the flop hard in an unlikely way. Since by definition they are locked into their professorial view of the poker universe ... ... they will never put you and that hand and the payoff is huge ... hehehe ... and they tilt like the Tower of Pisa.

It is called being lazy - far easier to type with Caps Lock on than to keep pressing the shift key to enable a capital letter.
