Actually its not bad advice to keep your screen name somewhat guarded, although many players publicly post theirs, I guess it's just personal decision and if you play lower limits not as big of a deal.
A good example, is that when playing live, all the good players or pro's know who each other are, and generally avoid big confrontations or play around each other mostly preying on weaker players. Even online, good players know who each other are just by observation and generally prefer to play with the bad players.
